Rhinoplasty

What is rhinoplasty and what are the indications for surgery?

Nose defects can be both acquired (injuries) and congenital. Often rhinoplasty can solve not only aesthetic but also functional problems (nasal breathing). Nowadays, nose surgery is a very popular, common and very often performed surgery and in the hands of a skilled surgeon nose reshaping has made so many people around the world very happy, making them more confident and happy with their nose shape.

  • Rhinoplasty(nose reshaping, nose surgery) is a plastic surgery to change the shape and size of the nose and is performed in two ways:

Open rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty can change bone, cartilage, skin or all three. Talk with your surgeon about whether rhinoplasty is appropriate for you and what it can achieve. The method of operation is chosen by the plastic surgeon during the consultation, taking into account the individual characteristics and wishes of each patient.

What rhinoplasty can treat?

Nose size in relation to facial balance

Nose width at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostrils

Nose profile with visible humps or depressions on the bridge

Nasal tip that is enlarged or bulbous, drooping, upturned or hooked

Nostrils that are large, wide or upturned

Nasal asymmetry

If you desire a more symmetrical nose, keep in mind that everyone's face is asymmetrical to some degree. Results of nose reshaping may not be completely symmetrical, although the goal is to create facial balance and correct proportion.

Indications for rhinoplasty :

Nose deformities after injuries

Nasal breathing problems (e.g. deviated septum).

Disproportionate nose (irregularities, hooked nostrils, large nostrils, long nose, saddle nose). Reduction or increase in size of the nose.

It must be remembered that rhinoplasty is one of the most complex operations in aesthetic surgery. Therefore, this nose reshaping should be performed only by a very experienced surgeon.

Contraindications to rhinoplasty :

Incomplete formation of the facial skeleton (under 18 years)

Diabetes mellitus

Diseases of blood clotting

Cancer, inflammatory, infectious diseases

Rhinoplasty is not suitable for underage patients, as it is performed only after the termination of growth and puberty. Nose surgery performed at an earlier age may interfere with the patient's development and growth.

The optimal age for rhinoplasty is between 18 and 35 years, but these limits are very conditional, as everything depends on the scale of the nose surgery and the type and quality of skin of the nose.

In terms of recovery processes, enough flexibility and elasticity of soft tissues allows you to perform a larger scale nose surgery, and also reduces the risk of excessive scarring and tissue thickening, which may adversely affect the final shape of the nose.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. With closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made in the so-called vestibule of the nose, that is, inside the sinus, so postoperative scars are not visible.

During surgery, the outer skin is separated from the bone and cartilage, soft and hard tissue is corrected, and resorbable sutures are placed on the mucosa.

After rhinoplasty, cotton pads are inserted into the nose and a special fixation splint is placed on top of the nose.

What is the duration of rhinoplasty surgery?

The rhinoplasty procedure lasts about 2-3 hours.

How to prepare for rhinoplasty?

Before rhinoplasty it is necessary to have a personal consultation with the plastic surgeon. After a thorough discussion with the client about the future operation, the surgeon will determine the order of the nose surgery and will give detailed instructions.

For 3 weeks before rhinoplasty it is necessary to stop taking blood thinning medications.

The patient should not suffer from any acute or inflammatory diseases (e.g. colds, flu) 2 to 3 weeks before rhinoplasty and smokers should limit smoking because it slows down the recovery process and compromises the results of nose surgery.

Necessary condition for rhinoplasty is good health, exclusion of pregnancy and breastfeeding.

It is necessary to come to the nose surgery on an empty stomach, that is, 8 hours before the nose reshaping you should not drink, eat or smoke, and it is also recommended to wash your hair and not to put makeup on your face.

How many days after rhinoplasty must be spent in the hospital?

After rhinoplasty the patient remains in the hospital for 1 night.
